Background

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Mike Amesbury (Labour) on 17 March 2025, following his conviction for assault.

Labour had won Runcorn and Helsby at the 2024 General Election with 52.9% and a majority of 14,696; Reform UK was second on 18.1%. The six-vote result overturned that majority and was Reform UK's first parliamentary by-election gain.
